Allen Craig Still Not Ready To Return

St. Louis Cardinals utility outfielder was having a break-through season before bashing his knee into a wall in foul territory during a road trip in Houston back in early June.

The crash resulted in a broken knee cap for Craig, who was believed to be out four to six weeks.

Unfortunately, Craig still is not ready to begin playing as he works out with the team's Triple A affiliate in Memphis.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says that the power hitting right-handed bat may still need some more time to fully heal.

"We're being a little careful with Craig," La Russa said. "He's not a hundred percent cleared to do everything all the time, but he's making progress."

La Russa could really use Craig's bat to give the team a spark and a power threat from the right side off the bench.

In 40 games played this season, Craig is hitting .336 with four home runs and 23 RBI's while spending time in the field in the outfield and at second and third base.

Craig's slow return to the lineup also gives general manager John Mozeliak less chips to play with as he searches for pitching solutions for both the Cardinals starting rotation and bullpen.
