St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ryan Theriot has been swinging a hot bat for the Cardinals of late and carried an 18 game hitting streak into the Cardinals afternoon showdown with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

But the Cubs held almost held Theriot hitless on Sunday.  That was until Theriot stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, a runner on first, and the Cardinals down a run.

Theriot promptly jumped all over a hanging slider from Cubs closer Carlos Marmol and lined a double down the left field line, scoring Tony Cruz from first base and tying the game 2-2.

Not only did the hit give Albert Pujols a chance to hit his second walk-off home run in as many days in the Cardinals 3-2 victory in 10 innings, but the hit extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Pujols was the hero with his monster blast, but the all-star first baseman knows that he would not of had the chance if it wasn't for Theriot.

"Awesome, great at-bat," Pujols said. "He's been doing that all year."

Pujols is spot on with his analysis.  While having his struggles in the field, Theriot has excelled at the plate this season.  He is hitting .300 with 21 RBI's on the season and most importantly, getting on base for Pujols and the rest of the Cardinals big boppers.

So while Pujols will get most of the press for his huge bomb in the 10th inning to give the Cardinals the win, lets not forget Theriot's clutch hit to get the Cardinals to extra innings.
