And while Carpenter was the opening day starter for the Cardinals this season, his numbers and results hardly guarantee that Carpenter is indeed the ace.
In fact, of the five Cardinals regular starting pitcher, only Jake Westbrook has a worst ERA than Carpenter's 4.47 ERA.
So, it leads to the important question that will raise its ugly head come playoff, assuming the Cardinals make it. Who is the Cardinals best starting pitcher?
Jamie Garcia certainly has shown in his second season to have nasty stuff. Garcia has posted a 6-2 record with a 3.20 ERA. The left-hander strikes out 7.93 batters per nine innings, top on the staff.
Surprisingly, Kyle Lohse has been stellar this season as well. Lohse leads to rotation in ERA at 2.67 and has a record of 7-3. Lohse has the lowest WHIP, which is the average of the amount of walks and hits allowed per nine innings. Lohse is at 1.02 on the season.
And then there is Carpenter who has been the long-time leader of the rotation and an absolute bulldog when healthy during his entire career. But Carpenter has just a 1-6 record and a WHIP of 1.39.
So who is the Cardinals best starting pitcher? Who starts game one in the playoffs if all are on regular rest? Who starts game seven of the World Series if all are available? Vote now!
