St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle McClellan returned from the disabled list on Wednesday night to make the start against the Washington Nationals.

Judging by the way he pitched and by the defense behind him, maybe McClellan wishes he would have stayed on the disabled list?

The Nationals tagged McClellan for five runs, three of which were earned, in five innings as the Nationals pounded the Cardinals 10-0.

Two of McClellan's unearned runs allowed were a result of errors made by Albert Pujols, who was appearing at third base for the fifth time this season.

Although McClellan had little support from his defense, he really was not sharp.  McClellan allowed a home run to Nationals first baseman Michael Morse in the second inning to start the Washington scoring and it didn't stop there.

McClellan was not Morse's only victim as he hit an absolute bomb over the left field bullpen off of embattled reliever Ryan Franklin.  Franklin was brutal in relief of McClellan, lasting just 1.2 innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits, including two long home runs.

While the pitching and the defense were both bad for the second consecutive game for the Cardinals, the offense decided to not show up either.  The Cardinals managed just three hits on the night against Nationals starter Livan Hernandez.  Two of those hits came off the bat of outfielder Jon Jay, who raised his average on the season to .314.

The loss is the fifth in a row for the Cardinals who now have a record of 38-31.
