Berkman capped his second return to Houston as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals with a ninth inning, 416 foot home run in the Cardinals 9-2 victory over the Astros.
Berkman has been good all season for the Cardinals, posting a .331 average with 15 home runs and 45 RBI's on the season through Thursday. But Berkman has been particularly outstanding against the Astros.
In eight games against his former teammates, Berkman is hitting .462 with five home runs and 12 RBI's.
Berkman's dominance of Houston has to torture the Astros fan base who adored the "Big Puma" for so many years when he donned the Astros uniform. Berkman says that when he plays at Minute Maid Park, its is just like any other day.
"I've got a different uniform on, but it's still a great place to hit," Berkman said. "I'm just trying not to make an out. I'll enjoy it and try to get ready for the game tomorrow."
The Cardinals took a chance when they signed Berkman to play outfield. Berkman is 35 years of age and his production had been declining. But luckily the Cardinals struck gold and Berkman has been performed as if he is a National League MVP candidate through the first third of the season.
And as shortstop Ryan Theriot points out, he isn't just doing it against his former team.
"Lance has had a great year and I don't think he's just picking on the Astros, he's picking on everybody," Theriot said. "He's swung the bat well and been consistent particularly well here but he's played a lot of games here and he's comfortable here."
Comfortable is an understatement.
