Cardinals Send Matt Carpenter Back To Memphis

In order to make room for starting pitcher Kyle McClellan, who was returning from the disabled list to make the start against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night, the Cardinals needed to make a roster move.

One night after watching the bullpen implode, the Cardinals chose to send third baseman Matt Carpenter back to Memphis rather than make a roster move that impacted the depleted bullpen.

Carpenter's demotion is good news for Mitchell Boggs fans, as was once again the likely candidate to return to Memphis despite being effective out of the Cardinals bullpen.

The good news Boggs received was bad news for Carpenter, who finishes up his first major league stint be appearing in just seven games and collecting just one hit in 15 at bats.

Meanwhile McClellan is making his first start since May 30th.  The right-hander from St. Louis has a 6-2 record in his first year as a starter with a 3.86 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 67.2 innings.
