Cardinals Call On Matt Carpenter and Mark Hamilton

The St. Louis Cardinals have had their share of injury issues this season.  Matt Holliday, David Freese, and Nick Punto are all currently on the disabled list and the Cardinals have jettisoned numerous players up Highway 55 to fill in the gaps.

On Friday, in anticipation of an always interesting series with the Chicago Cubs, the Cardinals are borrowing third baseman Matt Carpenter and first baseman Mark Hamilton from the Memphis Redbirds.

To make room for two farmhands, the Cardinals will send rookie infielder Pete Kozma back to Memphis.  Another roster move has to be made as well, although it is unclear who else will be moved, although it is likely going to be either Maikel Cleto or Lance Lynn.  Both pitchers made their major league debuts in Thursday nights 12-7 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Carpenter is a slick fielding third baseman that had an excellent spring training for the Cardinals and nearly made manager Tony La Russa put him on the big league club.  Carpenter was hitting .283 with two home runs and 23 RBI's in 52 games for Memphis.  Carpenter is a sure bet to see immediate playing time as the Cardinals struggle to find the offense to replace Freese's bat at the "Hot Corner."

Hamilton will be making his second appearance of the season in St. Louis.  In his first tour, Hamilton received just 15 at bats, collecting three hits.  But in Memphis the slugger has ripped the cover off the ball.  Hamilton is hitting .391 with two home runs and 22 RBI's in just 25 games for the Redbirds.
