Sobotka was one of the Blues top penalty killers last season, but also found himself on the number one scoring line as well as on the power play. While those roles may not be exactly ideal for Sobotka's game, the fact that the Blues inked the forward to a new three year, $3.9 million contract should be good news for Blues fans.
Sobotka is the perfect third line player. He plays hard, is great defensively, and is a magnificent skater. Sobotka can also find the back of the net, scoring seven goals and assisting 22 others. Blues general manager Doug Armstrong acknowledged that Sobotka's all-around game made it important for the organization to lock up the forward from the Czech Republic.
“Vlady is a hard-nosed two-way player that filled many roles for us last season,” said Armstrong. “His work ethic is an excellent representation of our organization.”
By signing Sobotka, the Blues have continued to prove that they are dedicated to keeping their core players together despite an ownership situation that is less than ideal.
Giving Sobotka a contract extension may not be very sexy, but he is the exact type of player the Blues need if they ever plan on getting back to the playoffs.
