The St. Louis Blues announced earlier this past week that they have signed defense-man Roman Polak to a new contract.

The contract spans over the next five seasons, paying Polak a total of $13.75 million over the course of the contract.

"We believe Roman is one of the top defensive defensemen in the league who plays against the opposing team's best players night after night," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said in a statement. "He's one of our top penalty killers who is just reaching the prime of his career and we're happy to have him in the fold for the next five years."

The Blues locked Polak before he was scheduled to become a restricted free agent on July 1st.

The 25 year old defense-man from Czechoslovakia played in 55 games last season for the Blues, scoring three goals while registering nine assists and 33 penalty minutes on the season.

While Polak does not ring up the lamp, he does provide the Blues a solid defensive presence, allowing offensive minded defense-man like Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk to wonder up ice and get in the offensive mix.
