St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ryan Theriot missed his second consecutive game on Friday night. The leadoff hitter aggravated a right rib cage injury earlier this week in Chicago and has been virtually unavailable the last two days.
But Theriot is expected to return to the lineup on Saturday afternoon, which is good news for those Cardinals fans that were miffed when they saw Allen Craig play second base on Thursday afternoon.
"Yesterday, he went out and I told him to take it easy -- no throws, no swings," Cardinals interim and acting manager Joe Pettini said. "So he took a day off yesterday from everything. And then today, he would have taken some ground balls, making throws. He's going to hit in the cage. It's just being prudent. When you're ready to go, you get an extra day just to be careful."
Theriot is hitting .287 on the season with 11 RBI's while serving as a key catalyst at the top of the Cardinals powerful offense.
Meanwhile Cardinals left-handed reliever Brian Tallet is making progress. Tallet broke a bond in his non-throwing hand covering first base on April 12th in Arizona.
Tallet will likely start a rehab assignment early next week. The left-hander has appeared in five games for the Cardinals, posting a 2.08 ERA in 4.1 innings of work.
