St. Louis Cardinals prospect Shelby Miller wanted to make sure that Cardinals fans did not forget about him.
Earlier this week, the Cardinals organization promoted infield prospect Zack Cox to Double AA Springfield and showcased 19 year old Carlos Martinez at Busch Stadium on Thursday night. Miller did not want to be outdone and his latest performance should not go unnoticed.
Miller struck out 12 hitters in seven innings on Friday night, a 3-2 loss for Single A Palm Beach. While the strikeout total was impressive for Miller on Friday night, allowing just three hits, one earned run, and just one walk is what makes the kid so promising.
There is not a doubt in anybody's mind that Miller is developing into a power pitcher. Miller knows it.
"It's a lot when you think about it," Miller said. "I'm a strikeout guy. I'm not throwing two-seam sinkers out there."
Miller has now struck out 81 hitters in 53 innings while walking just 20 batters, which indicates he does indeed have power stuff. It also indicates that the youngster is able to dominate while throwing strikes.
But what Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan would like to see is an improvement in Miller's off-speed stuff. Miller does most of his damage with his electric fastball, but knows that developing his change-up and curve ball quickly will help reach St. Louis more quickly.
"It's not exactly where I want it to be," said Miller. "It's something my pitching coach and I are still working on."
So while Miller works on his off-speed pitches, Carlos Martinez develops into a pitcher rather than a thrower, and Zack Cox perfects his swing at Springfield, Cardinals fans can sit comfortably knowing that the future is bright for these three high profile prospects.
