St. Louis Cardinals fans have quickly become enamoured with rookie reliever Eduardo Sanchez. The gunslinger had converted four consecutive saves in four chances coming into Friday night's game against division rival Cincinnati.
And just when everyone thought the Cardinals may have found their closer, Sanchez promply blew a ninth inning lead in the Cardinals 6-5 loss to the Reds in Ohio.
Sanchez walked former Cardinals shortsop Edgar Renteria to start the ninth inning before allowing, of all people, Brandon Phillips to loop a single into center field to score Renteria and tie the game.
While Sanchez got the loss, it was reliever Jason Motte who got the loss as he coughed up a run on a Joey Votto single to end the game in the bottom of the tenth.
The blown save by Sanchez spoiled a quality start by comedian starter Kyle Lohse, who pitched six solid innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four Reds hitters.
Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday continued to swing a hot bat, going three for five with two RBI's on the evening. Albert Pujols also had a good game, picking up two hit, which raised his batting average to .273 on the season.
And while Lohse was solid and the boppers on the offense did their job, it was the bullpen once again that cost the Cardinals yet another game.
