Reds Sweep Series From Cardinals

The rivalry between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds continues to grow and develop on the field with every game played between the two clubs.

Most of tension stems from a brawl that occurred last year that began with Brandon Phillips referring to the Cardinals as a bunch of female dogs.

And on Sunday it was Phillips who hurt the Cardinals the most in the Reds 9-7 victory over the Cardinals.  To the disgust of many Cardinals fans, Phillips hit a two run double off of Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter in the seventh inning that basically buried the Cardinals and secured the series sweep for the Reds.

The loss moves the Cardinals a game and a half back of the newly minted first place Reds.

While the Cardinals had fallen behind 6-2 after Phillips double and eventually 9-2 by the time the bottom of the seventh inning was over, the Cardinals did not go down without a fight.

The Cardinals took advantage of an erratic Aroldis Chapman, who issued four consecutive walks to Cardinals hitters to begin the top of the ninth.  The Cardinals struck for five runs in the ninth inning, lead by a two run double by Nick Punto to push the score to 9-7.

After Albert Pujols was hit on the hand by a pitch and a fielder's choice by Matt Holliday, Lance Berkman stepped to the plate with runners on first and third.  Berkman, who had already homered earlier in the game, promptly struck out to end the game and secure the series sweep for the Reds.

Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter picked up the loss for the Cardinals, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits.  But Carpenter was not helped out by his defense.  Tyler Greene and Albert Pujols committed two costly errors in helping the Reds to their nine runs on the afternoon.

And while the sweep at the hands of the Reds is a big deal, the antics at the end of the game could be the biggest story.

After striking out Berkman to end the game, Francisco Cordero yelled emphatically and pointed into the Cardinals dugout.

The Reds won this bout over the Cardinals, but Cordero's antics insure that this rivalry is truly just beginning.
