Punto To DL, Kozma Called Up

St. Louis Cardinals utility infielder Nick Punto just can not shake the injury bug.

Punto began the 2011 season on the disabled list after recovering from sports hernia surgery.  Now, Punto is headed to the disabled list again with a strained right forearm.

"I knew there was definitely a little more than a sore elbow," Punto said. "I was just trying to be optimistic that it would go away with treatment and the stuff we've been doing. But the experts, the doctors and trainers just believe it's best to take a little bit of time. For me, that's frustrating. But in the grand scheme of things, it's probably the right thing to do, as frustrating as it is."

Punto has appeared in 25 games this season for the Cardinals, hitting .262 with 11 RBI's and a .355 on base percentage.

Meanwhile, in order to fill Punto's vacant roster spot, the Cardinals promoted former 2007 first round pick Pete Kozma to the big league club.  Kozma has played primarily shortstop throughout his entire minor league career, but the Cardinals will not hesitate to use the rookie at second or third base in Punto's absence.

Kozma was hitting .220 at Triple-A Memphis this season with 17 RBI's in 38 games.
