Pujols Homers, Holliday Returns, But Cardinals Lose To Giants

Albert Pujols has received an enormous amount of scrutiny nationally for his lack of power production at the plate this season.  But the slugger may be showing signs of heating up with the temperatures outside.

Pujols bombed his ninth home run of the season on Monday afternoon, but it was not enough as the Cardinals lost to the San Francisco Giants 7-3 at Busch Stadium.  It was the second home run in the last seven games for Pujols.

Among other highlights for the Cardinals on Monday was the return of Matt Holliday to the lineup.  Holliday had missed six consecutive games after aggravating a quad injury while the Cardinals were in Kansas City.  Holliday finished the afternoon with just one single in four plate appearances.

The home run by Pujols and the return of Holliday completed the extent of hightlights for the Cardinals.  Starter Kyle McClellan was knocked around for seven runs in just four innings, taking the loss and raising his ERA on the season to 3.86.

Pujols also stole a base in the defeat, his fourth of the season, while Allen Craig got the start at second base and was 2 for 4 with two doubles on the afternoon.

The loss moves the Cardinals record to 32-23 this season and currently sit in first place in the National League Central Division.
