Cardinals Get Rare Day Off

St. Louis Cardinals fans have been spoiled over the past 16 days.  They have been spoiled because the Cardinals have not had an off day since May 9th, giving fans 16 consecutive days of Cardinals baseball.

So while the die-hard baseball fans will be forced to watch prime-time television for the first time in more than two weeks on Thursday night, the Cardinals are definitely in need of the scheduled day off.  The club will have a short rest on Thursday before traveling to Colorado to take on the Rockies at Coors Field.

Some may argue that an off day may hurt the Cardinals, as the team has played well over the stretch.  The team was 10-6 over that stretch, including an 8-2 record over the team's last ten games.

But a day off will certainly help some of the Cardinals with injuries get healthy.  I'm mainly talking about Matt Holliday, who aggravated a quad injury last weekend in Kansas City.  The team and Holliday are hoping to avoid the disabled list.

"We'll see when we get there, but I hope to play in Colorado," Holliday said.

Infielder Skip Schumaker, who just returned from the disabled list, likely can benefit from the day off as well.  Schumaker has struggled to get his timing back since returning, going just 1 for 9 with four strikeouts since his return to the lineup.  An extra day in the cage and to get settled can only help Skip.

The skipper can also use the day off.  Remember, Tony La Russa may look better on television, but he is still suffering from shingles.

So while Cardinals fans may feel entitled to their daily dose of Cardinals baseball, the day off will certainly help the team recover from a very busy stretch of games.  Plus, for us sports nuts, its good to watch some comedy television every now and then.
