When Westbrook returned to the mound after the delay, he was not the same, and Chicago Cubs jumped all over him. Westbrook was able to record just one out and allowed five earned runs to score by exiting early in the Cardinals 11-4 loss at Wrigley Field.
Westbrook's poor outing moves his record to 2-3 on the season, but most alarming is his 6.92 ERA, easily the worst of the five Cardinals starter.
After Jason Motte stopped the bleeding in the third, he gave way to embattled reliever Ryan Franklin. And unfortunately, Franklin was still not able to get on track, serving up four earned runs on seven Chicago hits before leaving after throwing 54 pitches.
The Cardinals offense was relatively quiet as they could not solve Chicago starter Matt Garza. The Cardinals did piece together four runs on the night, but three of those runs came in the seventh inning after Garza had left and with the game basically in hand.
Albert Pujols was 1 for 3 with a two run single in the seventh inning and Colby Rasmus was 2 for 5 with an RBI to lead the Cardinals offensively.
The Cardinals and Cubs play the third game of their series in a Thursday afternoon matinee at Wrigley Field.
