After getting swept by the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend, the St. Louis Cardinals knew that Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies would not be any easier.
The Cardinals were going up against former Cy Young Award Winning Cliff Lee.
And yet, the Cardinals were able to piece together three runs, helped by six uncharacteristic Lee walks, in order to steal a 3-1 victory over the Phillies.
While beating Lee is always a great feat for any offense, the biggest star in the game was Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook. Westbrook and Lee played together in Cleveland in years past and it was Westbrook who got the better of this pitching duel between the former teammates.
Westbrook tossed seven solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits while giving his an offense a chance to overwork Lee.
The game featured the return of Tony La Russa to the dugout, who had missed the Cardinals entire six game road trip while dealing with a nasty case of the shingles.
Another oddity also occurred as La Russa inserted star first baseman Albert Pujols over at third base. It was the first time that Pujols had started a game at third base since 2002. Pujols took the collar on the evening going 0 for 4.
Fernando Salas, who looks to be the next choice as the Cardinals interim closer, pitched a quiet ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The win moves the Cardinals record to 23-19 on the season.
