Selig Prefers Pujols In St. Louis

St. Louis Cardinals fans should rejoice.  Their first baseman Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals were unable to nail down a contract extension this off season.

But, it looks as though they have the commissioner of Major League Baseball in their corner.

Bud Selig recently spoke regarding the pending free agency of slugging first baseman Albert Pujols and here is what he had to say.

“I was talking once with Robin Yount and George Brett and said they were getting to be the exceptions (players who stayed in one place). But they were such big parts of their communities. Their communities were better off that they stayed. And the players said they were better off, too. So, yes, baseball would be better with Albert in St. Louis.”
Big time stuff from the commissioner of the entire league.

So while Selig suggests it might be in the best interest of baseball for Pujols to stay in St. Louis, is it the best thing for Albert?

And possibly more importantly, is it the best thing for the St. Louis Cardinals organization?

Either way, despite the wishes of Pujols and the Cardinals, his pending free agency and the disappointing result of this past off-season's contract negotiations will continue to be a story as the calendar turns on the 2011 season.

  1. Albert IS the face and spirit of the Cardinals and must be a part of this organization until his eventual retirement. I'd be willing to pay an extra dollar per ticket to keep him here and I suspect most fans would also. He's great for our team and great for our community.

  2. I agree Albers is the face of the Cardinals and I too would be willing to pay extra to see him stay in St. Louis. Some how, some way management must make this happen.

  3. Agree with both comments that it would be great for Albert to come back to St. Louis and sign a long term extension. But at what price?

I don't think Pujols leaving would be that terrible if he wants anything longer than a 7 year contract.

Cardinals fans could quickly make Matt Holliday the "face of the organization."
