So, general manager Billy Devaney obliged, selecting tight end Lance Kendricks out of Wisconsin in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Surely a bit of a surprise considering the Rams had 4 tight ends on their roster last season and second year player Mike "Illini Mike" Hoomanawanui showed great promise last season while healthy. Illini Mike had 13 receptions for 146 yards and 3 touchdowns in just 8 games last season.
But, evidently Devaney and Steve Spagnuolo see something in Kendricks, but I am not sure what.
Kendricks is just 6 foot 2 inches tall and weighs only 243 pounds so he is not a huge target for Bradford at tight end. He is relatively quick for a tight end though, running a 4.65 time in the 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine.
He also managed to snatch 43 receptions for 663 yards and 5 touchdowns last season for the Badgers.
Here is a quick scouting report from Kendricks from ESPN.com.
"Kendricks in an H-back type who doesn't offer much as a blocker and will never be dominant in that area, but he has the skill set to become a productive receiving option. He is quick enough to separate underneath and runs well after the catch, and he also has the speed to stretch the middle and tracks the deep ball well."Kendricks comes to the Rams as the 47th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
And while he doesn't provide Sam Bradford with a deep option, at least the Rams have given their star quarterback yet another "safety blanket."
