Albert Pujols, trying to beat out an infield single in the 7th inning, tweaked his hamstring and was removed from the game the very next inning. The club is describing the injury as "mild tightness" in his hamstring.
"I tried to get an infield hit, which I don't get too many of," Pujols told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "and after three or four steps, it felt a little tight. I pulled up because obviously I think I prefer tightness to a blown out hamstring. It's something that I have to deal with. It's been rough the last week or so with the rain. Our body takes a little beating."
Despite injuring his hamstring, Pujols is hoping he won't miss any time on the field for the 12-10 Cardinals, who currently sit in first place in the National League Central Division.
"I'll show up here early tomorrow, get treatment and we'll go from there. Right now, if I told you I was going to be playing Tuesday, I don't want to say yes and not be there. ... Hopefully, in my prayers, I feel good, have a good day off tomorrow, travel, and on Tuesday I'll be ready to go."
Pujols should pray that he can be on the field as soon as possible. With his pending free agency this off season, every game that he is healthy gives him another chance to build up some monster numbers once again.
Pujols is hitting just .250 on the season, well below his career .330 average. But, he is slugging the ball all over the field, bombing 7 home runs and knocking in 17 RBI's in just 22 games.
With that type of production, Cardinals should pray that Pujols is alright as well.
