Devaney Suggests Rams Will Not Draft Running Back

Last week, Steven Jackson let it be known that he was not particularly thrilled about the possibility that the St. Louis Rams could draft a feature running back in the 2011 NFL Draft. g

Jackson wasn't too keen on sharing the backfield.  At least not yet.

And on Tuesday, Rams general manager Billy Devaney echoed Jackson's sentiments, suggesting that the organization has 100% confidence in Jackson to get the job done.

"In our minds, (Jackson) is still playing at an extremely high level," Devaney said on Tuesday. "So, we don't feel like, 'Gosh, we'd better start looking down the road.' This kid is as good as there is. We don't feel any pressure to start lining somebody up to take Steven Jackson's place."

In 2010, Jackson certainly didn't look like he was slowing down.

The 27 year old running back carried the ball 330 times for 1,241 and 6 touchdowns in 2010.  The talented Jackson also caught 46 passes for 383 yards, all of which with a broken bone in his hand for most of the season.

While it could be expected that Jackson would not be very happy about sharing the backfield with a younger player, it does come as a surprise that the Rams are suggesting they will not look to draft a top running back later this week.

Former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram out of Alabama will likely be available when the Rams pick 14th on Thursday night and the Rams have lacked a quality back-up for Jackson over the past two seasons.

But, the team rode their horse in 2010 and it looks as though they are planning to do so again in 2011.

Let's hope that Jackson can manage to stay healthy and productive for another season, especially if the Rams don't draft a high profile running back.
