Allen Craig Begins Rehab Assignment

St. Louis Cardinals utility outfielder was playing great earlier this season, but was quickly slowed by injury.

In a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 16, Craig was 3 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI's.  He also injured his groin in the game and promptly went on the disabled list.

But, there is good news for Cardinals fans who are looking for Craig to return to the Cardinals to provide a power bat off the bench.

He is starting a rehab assignment which begin at Double A Springfield on Friday night.

Craig is hitting .313 this season with 1 home run and 7 RBI's in 11 games for the Cardinals.  And while his offense is a premium, he also serves as a valuable outfield back-up and can handle his own at both first and third base.

Craig is available to come off of the disabled list on Sunday, but Cardinals manager Tony La Russa hinted that Craig may stay down in the minors for a little bit longer in order to get some extra at bats.

"This is a good opportunity for him to play," La Russa said. "So it would be nice for him to get some at-bats and come back with great timing."

Whenever Craig gets back, he will be welcomed with open arms as the best power bat on the Cardinals bench.
