The San Francisco 49ers had a very disappointing season in 2010. The team struggled to score points in during the 2010 season, finishing 24th in the NFL with 305 points scored in 2010.
Many predicted that if Mizzou quarterback Blaine Gabbert was available when the 49ers picked in the draft that they would take the high profile quarterback in order to bolster the offense.
Instead, in a bit of a surprise, the 49ers chose a different Mizzou player.
With the 7th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Aldon Smith, a defensive end out of Missouri.
Smith coming off of the board si early was a bit of a surprise for many draft experts and even for some Mizzou fans.
But if you truly think about it, the pick makes absolute sense for the 49ers.
San Francisco played a 3-4 defense last season and many scouts believe that Smith is a perfect fit in that defensive scheme as an outside, pass-rushing defensive end.
Plus former Missouri Tigers defensive lineman Justin Smith is a member of the 49ers. So you have to assume that the Missouri native had to give Aldon Smith a high grade and passed valuable information along to the 49ers executives prior to making the pick.
While it may a bit of a surprise to many that Smith came off the board prior to quarterback Blaine Gabbert, Mizzou fans should be happy.
Head coach Gary Pinkel can now sit in the living room of high profile defensive line prospects and tell them that his program has produced a Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft.
And that fact alone will do wonders for the Mizzou program.
