Wainwright Staying Positive During Rehab

Recently, Adam Wainwright returned to Florida to rejoin his teammates during spring training.

While obviously unable to throw or play baseball during 2011, Wainwright has a positive outlook regarding the long road to recovery after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

"I should be better than new," Wainwright said. "Think about it."

Wainwright was referring to the heavy workload the ace has endured over the past two season that saw him throw 233.0 and 230.1 innings.

Only Roy Halladay, Felix Hernandez, and Dan Haren have thrown more innings than Wainwright over that span and Wainwright recognizes the opportunity not only to fix his elbow, but to rest and rebuild the rest of his body in anticipation of his return to the starting rotation in 2012.

"You get a year off to strengthen your body in every way, you get a year to think about the things you could have done differently, and you've got an all-new ligament in your arm."

Wainwright's optimism should be encouraging for Cardinals fans.

While the team will miss him in 2011, they certainly will need him 2012 as super-star Albert Pujols is a free agent and Chris Carpenter has an option to become a free agent as well after the 2011 season.
