Morgan was back at his shenanigans again today, running into Cardinals star Albert Pujols early in the team's 7-2 loss to the Nationals.
The Cardinals didn't take to kindly to Morgan's antics.
And coincidentally, Cardinals opening day starter Chris Carpenter, who himself has developed a temper over the past season or so, plunked two Nationals before exiting the game in 5th inning.
Carpenter's numbers were not good during his second start since returning from a hamstring injury.
Carpenter allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out just 1. Not encouraging for Cardinals fans hoping that Carpenter can step it up in the absence of Adam Wainwright.
When Carpenter left the game, the foul play did not end.
Miguel Batista, vying for a spot in the Cardinals bullpen after playing last season with, again, coincidentally, Washington, hit Ian Desmond in the back in the 7th inning.
Desmond took exception and jawed with Batista, causing both benches to clear and a heated exchange between the two managers.
Tony La Russa had little to say after the game regarding the incident, except for this insightful quote that only he could come up with.
"It's the same story -- it happens to us, it happens to them," La Russa said. "You get hit, you think it's intentional. They hit you, it was accidental. It's been 100 years of this stuff. It's not going to go any farther. That's it."
It ended up being a pretty wild, but unproductive day for the Cardinals, who managed to scratch together just 2 runs on 8 hits.
Matt Holliday led the way for St. Louis, going 2 for 2 with a double.
It will be interesting to see what happens between the two clubs when they take the field during the regular.
For the Cardinals hitters sake, hopefully Stephen Strasburg has not recovered from Tommy John surgery by that point.
