Business in the real world can be very dirty at times.  Negotiations and business deals can handled in slimy ways.

And in case anybody had any questions prior to Wednesday's announcement that Matt Painter would remain at Purdue after entertaining an offer from University of Missouri athletic director Mike Alden, college basketball is big business.

Painter and the Purdue announced today that the coach would stay in West Lafayette and has been given an 8 year contract extension.

Painter, using Mizzou as leverage, negotiated a new contract that likely will make him among the highest paid coaches in the Big 10, although the specific dollars in the deal have not been released.

The decision by Painter leaves Mizzou and Alden in a tough spot.  The team needs to find a coach quickly in order to keep Phil Pressey from transferring.

More importantly, filling the coaching vacancy may also secure top recruit Otto Porter.

Mizzou has not publicly commented on the situation at this time but remains in search of their next head coach.

Meanwhile, Painter says he is happy to be at Purdue with his newly minted contract.

"There's a lot to be excited about right now with Purdue basketball," Painter said. "We are moving into our new offices and locker room complex over the next couple of weeks. Our program is built on hard work, and we are ready to get back to improving as a team and a staff."

Hopefully Mizzou can announce something exciting sooner rather than later.
