But just in case, McClellan decided to have another stellar performance just as some extra insurance as the Cardinals cruised past the New York Mets on Sunday 3-1.
McClellan tossed 6 strong innings, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and two walks while striking out 5. Business as usual for K-Mac as he has one of the best springs of any pitcher in MLB baseball.
McClellan has made it known that making the rotation is important, but he also knows that the real work is yet to come as the regular season starts on Thursday.
"It's a good base, a good foundation, a good pace to start from," McClellan said of his spring performance, "but the real work is about to begin."
The offensive star for the Cardinals on Sunday was Allen Craig, who belted a home run and knocked in two of the Cardinals 3 runs.
Colby Rasmus served as the Cardinals leadoff hitter and went 0 for 4. Albert Pujols was 0 for 2 on the day.
But the star was McClellan once again. Pitching coach Dave Duncan was impressed.
"He's kept his pitch counts in order. He's been aggressive. He got a lot of groundballs," Duncan said. "He's ready to start the season."
Cardinals fans are ready to see if McClellan can duplicate his success during the regular season.
