The 2011 spring training has been about as noisy as anyone can remember. The Pujols contract saga, Wainwright injury and return of David Freese have dominated the news wires.
And the entire time, Matt Holliday has quietly gone about his business.
And he is putting up good numbers too.
Holliday hit his second home run of the spring on Monday in a 10 inning tie with the Atlanta Braves.
In his second full season with the Cardinals, Holliday may finally be settling down after trying to live up to $120 million expectations.
Its not as if Holliday had a terrible 2010. He led the Cardinals with a .312 average and bombed 28 home runs and knocked in 103 RBI's.
And yet some St. Louis fans were disappointed with Holliday's performance, particularly early last season. Holliday certainly had to feel the pressure.
But with big dollars being the center of attention surrounding the other Cardinals super-star, Holliday should be able to relax.
And he seems relaxed this spring, hitting .393 in 28 at bats. Holliday is driving the ball, with 3 doubles to go with his 2 homers.
I understand that it is just spring training, but Holliday swinging well is important for the Cardinals. The more offense the better as the team supports a starting rotation that is missing ace Adam Wainwright.
Let people continue to talk about Wainwright injury and the Albert contract saga.
Because I think Holliday can quietly put together an MVP type season.
