When the NCAA Tournament brackets were announced last Sunday, Illini fans immediately saw a possible second round match-up with current Kansas coach and former Illinois coach Bill Self.
But Illinois fans may be over-looking their first round game against another former coach.
Illinois will face a talented and dangerous UNLV team out of the Mountain West Conference that is coached by former Illini coach Lon Kruger.
Kruger coached Illinois for 4 seasons before leaving for big dollars in the NBA.
And his current team UNLV is very, very good.
Kruger has led the Runnin' Rebels to a 24-8 record, including wins over Wisconsin and Kansas State.
But current Illinois coach Bruce Weber will do his best to beat Kruger and have a chance at Self.
He may need to in order to keep his job.
And it feels as though Weber may be desperate, relying on luck to help the Illini on Friday.
"We're good enough. We've just got to find that new life and hope some balls bounce our way a little bit," Weber said. "Maybe March will be good to us."
Weber will need some luck in order to avoid joining the club of former Illinois coaches with Kruger and Self.
