Lon Kruger down. Up next, Bill Self.
Bruce Weber's Illinois Fighting Illini came out ready to play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and Demetri McCamey and company blitzed the UNLV Runnin' Rebels 73-62.
The victory sets up the match-up many Illinois fans have been dreaming about. Illinois will next face Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks.
Many were looking at the second round match-up leaving many, myself included, if the Illini would overlook Lon Kruger's bunch. Much like Self, Kruger also use to coach the Illini.
But Weber had the boys ready to play tonight, suffocating UNLV on defense and holding the Rebels to just 38% from the field.
Meanwhile, Illinois torched the nets offensively, shooting a robust 59% from the field, including 7 of 13 from 3 point range.
McCamey dropped in 17 points and dished out 7 assists, but the star of the show was Mike Davis.
Davis scored 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the victory.
The win now gives Illinois 20 on the season and has to have college basketball experts asking themselves where this team has been for most of the season.
In order to beat their other former coach Bill Self, the Illini may need even a better effort than they got Friday night as the Jayhawks are big, deep and talented.
But Weber has already guided Illinois over one former coach. How hard could it be to do it again?
