Edmonds Invited To Opening Day

Jim Edmonds knew that he would be at Busch Stadium for opening day of the 2011 season.

He also knew that he would be wearing a Cardinal uniform.

What Edmonds did not know though, was his role.  The 40 year old thought he'd be either roaming the outfield or sitting patiently on the bench, waiting patiently for a pinch-hitting opportunity.

Instead, he'll be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

Edmonds signed a minor league contract this off-season and every inclination was given that Edmonds would have a shot to make the club.

But an ankle injury held him back from participating in drills and the veteran outfielder made the classy decision to step away from the situation.

And now the Cardinals have made a classy decision of their own by inviting the 2006 World Series here to throw out the first pitch and make Edmonds part of the 2011 season.

It will feel like baseball season on Thursday at Busch Stadium.

Because Jimmy "Ballgame" Edmonds will be there.
