The 26 year old power forward leads the Blues in all offensive categories, including 27 goals, 56 points, and an impressive plus/minus of plus 25.
But, as the Blues dealt away most of their roster, including team captain Erik Brewer and former 1st round pick Erik Johnson, Backes has stepped up as team leader as well.
Backes has been instrumental in the Blues solid play down the stretch, particularly impressive since it would be so easy for the Blues to pack it for the remainder of what has turned out to be a lost season.
"We'll keep playing hard until the end of the season whether we're eliminated or not. There's a lot of pride in this room," Backes said. "Whether its Game 7 of the playoffs or game 75 that really has no playoff implications, you're looking for guys that are putting it all out. We still have a pretty good group of 20 guys."
For some people the play on the ice displays leadership. For others its the words you say.
Backes is demonstrating both attributes during a time when his team desperately needs a leader. The current roster is peppered with 12 players under the age of 25.
Leadership is imperative and Backes has done everything he can to help the Blues move forward and look towards next season in a positive light.
Its possible at that point that the A on his sweater will be replaced with the C he well deserves.
