The Missouri Tigers were win-less on the road in Big 12 play going into their game against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
Recognizing how desperate the Tigers were for a road victory, Mike Anderson shuffled his starting lineup, going for an unconventional look. Anderson started a group of players that likely have not been on the floor together at the same at any point this season.
And it worked, helping lead the Tigers to a 76-70 win over the Cyclones to improve their record to 7-5 in the Big 12.
Anderson started all Juniors who have been in the program for at least a year, going with Kim English, Marcus Denmon, Laurence Bowers, Steve Moore, and the lone senior on the team Justin Safford.
And although the combination didn't stay on the floor for very long on Saturday, Moore played just 6 minutes, it set the tone and helped lead the Tigers to victory.
"We've played spurts where we've played well on the road. We just hadn't done it for 40 minutes," Anderson said.
Denmon led the Tigers with 25 points and Bowers scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
The Tigers return home on Wednesday night to play the Baylor Bears.
But when Mizzou returns to the road, Bowers hopes that this win can carry over into future performances.
"We broke the huddle with 'Road Dogs,' " Bowers said. "We won, so we're calling ourselves 'Road Dogs' until midnight."
