Colby Rasmus has taken plenty of heat over the past couple of seasons, particularly regarding his shaky relationship with manager Tony La Russa.
Oh, and also regarding how often he strikes out.
So, it was good to see that the kid with problems making contact and with the boss showed up extra early this spring, according to a report from Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Hopefully Rasmus is working on cutting down on the 148 strikeouts he posted in 2010. The center fielder knows he must be more disciplined in order to help the team.
βI did that up until after the first month (of 2010),β Rasmus said of his plate discipline. βIn Spring Training I led the league in walks. The first month of the season I think I led the league in walks too. But after that it went downhill pretty fast.β
Rasmus also knows that his relationship with his manager must get better. He knows that the media circus that ensued around his relationship with La Russa can not occur again.
"It was a learning experience to do better for this year," Rasmus said. "Take all that in and not let any of that other stuff affect anything. I can't change what happened. I can't change what I did. So just use (the experience) for this year."
Big things are expected out of Rasmus and he could be the key to the Cardinals success.
Especially if he can cut down on those darn strikeouts.
