The University of Missouri is establishing itself as a football power in the Big 12.
With two possible first round draft picks in this year's NFL draft in former quarterback Blaine Gabbert and defensive end Aldon Smith, Mizzou is becoming more and more a popular place for top recruits to play their college football.
Mizzou announced the signing of 17 new recruits that will join the Tigers for the 2011 season.
“This is always an exciting day for our program and for these newest members of our family at Mizzou”, said Head Coach Gary Pinkel. “We feel very good that this group addresses our biggest needs on the football field, but just as importantly, they are high-quality young men who will represent our program and this University the right way.”
While the 2011 recruiting class does not top the national charts in rankings and the such by industry experts, it does fill out some glaring needs from weaknesses and departures from the 2010 squad.
The class is headlined by Sheldon Richardson, a 6 foot 4 inch, 290 pound defensive lineman out of Gateway Tech High School in St. Louis, MO. Richardson spent the past season playing Junior College football after trying to sort out his grades and comes to Mizzou as the third rated prospect of all Junior College players.
Another St. Louis athlete highlights the list for the Tigers. Brandon Hannah, a 6 foot 3 inch, 235 pound athlete out of Chaminade High School in St. Louis also will be joining the Tigers. Hannah has faced numerous injuries throughout his high school career, but targets to be an outstanding talent for the Tigers. Coach Pinkel has not indicated what position Hannah will play at the collegiate level, but it is believed that he is candidate at wide receiver, tight end, and even at line-backer.
The 2011 class also includes 9 players from Texas, a recruiting hot zone in which Gary Pinkel has had tremendous success, attracting talented players in the past like New Orleans Saints quarterback Chase Daniel and St. Louis Rams wide receiver Danario Alexander.
