After losing 1-0 to the Calgary Flames on Sunday night and with trade deadline looming on Monday, it could be interesting 24 hours for the St. Louis Blues organization.
The Blues and general manager Doug Armstrong have already made a big splash by trading former number one overall draft pick Erik Johnson in exchange for Christ Stewart and Kevin Shattenkirk.
And Armstrong feels comfortable with his current group.
"I like the makeup of our group right now," Armstrong told Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We've solidified our top six (forwards). We have offensive players in there. We're younger on the defensive end, but we understood that making those trades. We're going to live with that and see how these younger players respond. You never say never, but I'm not sure we're expecting to do anything major."
But it doesn't change the fact the ownership group is in financial flux and that the Blues are basically out of the race.
So, if the Blues do decide to make a move, here are the most likely parts that could be gone after Monday.
Brad Boyes - Forward
Boyes has been a favorite for Blues fans to bash over most of the past two season. He has 41 points on the season, which is more than respectable. But he also has a big contract that the Blues could pawn off on somebody in a salary dump, much like the Erik Brewer trade.
Barret Jackman - Defenseman
Jackman is the longest tenured Blues player, but much like Boyes, makes a bunch of money. Jackman could be very attractive to a team looking to strengthen their blue-line for the playoffs. Jackman may actually bring back a valuable prospect or draft pick.
Brad Winchester - Forward
Winchester isn't anything more than a 4th line grinder, but for a playoff team looking for depth up-front he could be somebody the Blues could move.
Andy McDonald - Forward
Likely the player teams are asking about the most. McDonald has been excellent since his return to the lineup from a concussion he suffered in December. Armstrong is probably hesitant to move McDonald, who is a top 6 forward on every single roster in the NHL.
The Blues have done their wheeling and dealing already and Armstrong has publicly said that he is basically done making moves.
But that doesn't mean, sitting 8 points out of a playoff spot, that one of these players doesn't get moved before Monday's NHL trade deadline.
Boyes just traded...you called it.
ReplyDeleteGood work!

I could see Winchester going somewhere for a 5th round pick..
ReplyDeleteHope they do not trade Mcdonald....we could use him next year

I don't think McDonals is going anywhere now that Boyes has been moved. It was one or the other.
ReplyDeleteI think they have to trade Jackman now. Complete the entire salary dump.
I think Jackman has a no movement clause...i think he would think really hard before waiving it,
