Jimmy "Ballgame" Edmonds is coming back to St. Louis.
No, it has nothing to do with tending to his downtown steakhouse. He's coming back to play baseball.
The St. Louis Cardinals and 40 year old outfielder Jim Edmonds have agreed to a minor league contract.
Edmonds will be invited to spring training, but there is no guarantee that he will make the team.
Edmonds will be competing for a back-up role in a crowded bench outfield that includes right-handed hitting Allen Craig and left-handed hitting Jon Jay.
The Cardinals are bringing home one of their heroes during the 2006 World Series and the general manager is excited about it.
"Jim has had a tremendous career here in St. Louis," general manager John Mozeliak said. "We are pleased that he has decided to give it one more try with the Cardinals."
Edmonds hit .276 with 11 home runs and 23 RBI's in 2010 while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds.
Edmonds is just 7 home runs shy of hitting 400 in his major league career.
Maybe coming back to St. Louis will help his business at the steakhouse as well.
