While the St. Louis Cardinals can not seem to muster enough cash together in order to ink their future Hall of Fame first baseman Albert Pujols to a long-term extension, they are spending cash in other places.
Among the organization's goals for the past 5 years has been to deepen the minor league farm system, specifically from players from the Caribbean nations of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Today, the Cardinals announced a success in that area, signing 16 year old right handed pitcher Fernando Gonzalez.
Gonzalez signed with the Cardinals for a reported $66,000.
Chalk this up as a success in the Caribbean.
And if the Cardinals will lose Albert, they will need a Caribbean signing to become a miracle to replace him.
