Cardinals Notes: Martinez Throws Gas, Berkman Still Hurting

19 Year Old Martinez Excites Cardinals

In recent years, St. Louis Cardinals relievers Jason Motte and Mitchell Boggs provided Cardinals fans a glimpse of the first power arms to come up through the club's minor league system.

Both touch the upper 90's each time they fire their fastball.  Motte and Boggs definitely will make the team this season and will be integral parts of the bullpen in 2011.  It might not be long until they are joined by another flame-thrower.

19 year old Carlos Martinez threw on Saturday and he dazzled Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak.

"These kind of days are always great," Mozeliak said. "It's a little bit like the anticipation before Christmas."

While its not clear whether Martinez projects as a starter or reliever, it is always good to have 98mph talent in the organization.

Berkman's Elbow Still Limited

Lance Berkman's elbow is still bothering him and he'll be limited in his duties as spring training turns over from drills to exhibition games.

Berkman did not play in Saturday's "coaches game" and will remain limited until his elbow feels better.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa doesn't see Berkman's elbow issue as a big deal.

"We're doing cut-offs and relays. He knows what a cut-off and relay is," La Russa told Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
