Lance Berkman has played first base for the past 4 seasons and in preparation for a move back to the outfield when he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals this past off-season, Berkman changed his workout routine.

Looking slimmer this spring, Berkman's hard work look to have paid off.  He'll need the mobility in order to chase down fly balls in the outfield.

But maybe he didn't work on his arm enough during his workouts.

On Friday, Berkman took it easy from throwing, citing discomfort in his left throwing elbow.

"We threw a lot yesterday, and my elbow is a little bit sore today, so I decided not to throw," Berkman said.

Berkman did take part in other drills, including batting practice, which is encouraging since the reason the Cardinals signed the former Houston Astros slugger is to drive the ball all over the field.

Despite his preparation in the off-season though, Berkman knows that he'll continue to experience changes as he adjusts back to being an everyday outfielder.

"Going from first base to the outfield, you throw more and a lot longer. So I just want to make sure that the elbow is where it needs to be."
