According to the Associated Press recap of the St. Louis Cardinals first spring training game, the Cardinals organization knew that injured utility infielder Nick Punto was injured when they signed him.
Punto returned to Jupiter today after having surgery on his "sports hernia" injury and spoke about the injury lingering from last season.
"Last year, I managed it with the cortisone injection," Punto told MLB.com's Matthew Leach. "It got me on the field. That's what, for me, it's about -- getting on the field and playing. I think the relief I got out of this was just the doctors looking out for my well-being. I probably could have tried to shoot it up with cortisone, but who knows, you get to July, and your season's over if you have to have surgery in July."
Does anybody else think that this is complete insanity?
The Cardinals had a utility infielder candidate in Brendan Ryan.
Instead, they signed an injured, aging player that has a lifetime batting average of .247.
Could Brendan Ryan be that horrible of a teammate that the Cardinals chose a player that will miss significant time over a young but erratic player?
Why give Nick Punto any sort of guaranteed contract when you know that he is injured?
Wasn't Punto examined by the same doctor that just performed Tommy John surgery on the right elbow of ace Adam Wainwright?
I'm sorry, but this is alarming.
Its political.
Its simply not right.
But its all ok. The manager doesn't feel like its a big deal.
"There's a lot of season left when he come back," Tony La Russa told the AP.
I may have forgot, but don't the games in April carry the same weight as the ones in July?
Brendan Ryan may be annoying. But at least he is healthy.
