Oshiomogho Atogwe was released by the St. Louis Rams on Friday afternoon.
It was highly believed that not only did the Rams want to pay Atogwe an $8 million roster bonus, but that they also do not believe that he is a game-changing type of player worthy of the bonus or the $3.5 million base salary the safety out of Stanford was going to make in 2011.
Ouch.
And the crazy thing is, Atogwe would still consider coming back.
"My agent and myself have established a really good negotiating relationship with them, so were we to do something again (with the Rams), I don't believe it'd be a difficult task," Atogwe told the Post-Dispatch. "Because there's no bad blood there. We should be able to get something done."
Either Atogwe is just a better man than I am or he is flat out crazy.
If releasing Atogwe in order to avoid paying him $8 million that was promised to him less than one year ago doesn't cause blood, then what else can?
Atogwe, much like the player's union, would be crazy to come back to St. Louis.
Maybe he is more forgiving than most, but its this type of treatment of a very good football player that makes me feel as though the NFL Player's Union has a legitimate beef with the current system in the NFL.
Nothing in a NFL player's contract is guaranteed.
One thing that is guaranteed is that Atogwe is among the top safeties in the league each and every year with his 73 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions in 2010.
And here is another thing that is also guaranteed.
If Atogwe decides to come back to St. Louis yet again, he still won't get the respect that he deserves.
