Pat Shurmur comes from an incredible lineage of football history.
His uncle, Fritz Shurmur, served as the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers from 1994-1998.
The head coach in Green Bay at that time was Mike Holmgren, who is now the man making the decisions in Cleveland.
So it should come as no surprise that the current offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams has suddenly become the lead candidate in the Cleveland Browns head coach search.
Sources have said that the Browns and Shurmur are trying to hammer out a contract during the next 48 hours and they hope to announce the hiring at a former press conference on Friday.
Shurmur joined the St. Louis Rams as offensive coordinator in 2009. This past season, with rookie quarterback Sam Bradford taking the snaps, Shurmur guided an offense that lacked weapons on the outside to within one game of reaching the NFL playoffs.
Much has been made of his handling of Bradford, who looked poised beyond his years at quarterback, much of which Shurmur has been given credit.
Shurmur will get a chance to work with another young quarterback in Cleveland in Colt McCoy, the former Texas Longhorn standout, who led a passing attack that ranked just 29th in the league.
