Pujols Sets Contract Deadline

Unfortunately for St. Louis Cardinals fans, the organization has until the first day of spring training to get a long-term contract in place.

Otherwise, "El Hombre" is planning on testing free agency after the 2011 season.

According to a report by Buster Olney of ESPN, Pujols agent has contacted the Cardinals and let them know that the contract must be done before any mandatory baseball activities begin.

Otherwise, no contract.

When asked at the annual Winter Warm-up on Saturday, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak responded, "Hopefully in the near future it's something we can talk more about, but right now I'm not prepared to."

Its good that Mozeliak is keeping things relatively quiet, as both sides want the negotiations to remain private.

Pujols is the face of the St. Louis Cardinals franchise and if a contract is not done by the time players report to Jupiter, Florida, things won't be so rosy in "Baseball Heaven."
