Prospect Zack Cox Ranked 8th Best Third Base Prospect

Last year during the Major League Baseball entry draft the Cardinals took a bit of a risk with the 25th selection of the draft.

They signed draft eligible sophomore Zack Cox, a third baseman out of Arkansas and perceived by many to be the best pure hitter in the entire draft.

It was believed that Cox would be difficult to sign as he still had a year of eligibility under his belt at Arkansas.

But at the last hour the Cardinals got a contract with Cox signed and now have the 8th rated third base prospect in all of baseball.

This is a good omen for an organization that has third base concerns.

Often injured David Freese is slated as the 2011 starter and Allen Craig plans on working his way into a back-up role.

If either or both fail, Cox doesn't seem to far off and could possibly make a debut at the major league level as early as 2012 if his bat is as good as many say it is.

Many talent scouts feel that Cox already has a major league ready bat but needs time to develop power in his smoothy, lefty stroke.

The Cardinals already think highly of Cox, sending him to the Arizona Fall League after last season, a league that generally has many players that are not too far from the big leagues.

Cox played relatively well, hitting .262 with 2 home runs and 14 RBI's in 65 at bats.  Not too shabby for a kid straight out of college.

Its unclear at what level Cox will play in the organization in 2011, but the future at the hot corner looks bright in St. Louis.
