Finally, after a three day marathon, the St. Louis Rams and former Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels have agreed to terms and McDaniels will serve as the Rams new offensive coordinator.
"We are happy to announce that Josh will be a part of our staff," coach Steve Spagnuolo said in a statement. "I've always recognized that he is one of the top offensive minds in the NFL. We think he is a great addition to our organization."
The process literally became a circus when reports surfaced that the Rams had agreed that McDaniels was the best guy for the job, but dollars were not adding up between the two parties, delaying the eventual inevitable that McDaniels will be wearing the head phones guiding Sam Bradford and the upstart Rams.
Gone is the "West Coast" offense that Bradford ran during his rookie season under now Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur.
Instead, McDaniels brings with him another offense that Bradford is quite familiar with, the "Spread Offense."
Bradford successfully ran the college version of the spread while at Oklahoma, so its a transition that should be easy for the talented and cerebral Bradford.
McDaniels has been known to make quarterbacks better, helping Matt Cassel fill in for an injured Tom Brady in 2008 as offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. And more recently as the lead man in Denver, McDaniels orchestrated an offense ran by Kyle Orton.
Prior to working with McDaniels, Orton never had a quarterback rating higher than 79.6. In his two years under McDaniels, Orton's quarterback ratings were 86.8 and 87.5.
McDaniels will make Bradford better and thus, the St. Louis Rams better.
It was a surprising move by Coach Spags, but the right one. Well done.
