Free Throws, Decision Making Kill Tigers Against Aggies

The 12th ranked Missouri Tigers traveled to College Station, Texas to take on the 13th ranked Texas A&M Aggies in a Big 12 showdown on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers had the lead with one minute to go in regulation, but from that point forward, free throws and decision making cost the Tigers as they lost to the Aggies 91-89 in overtime.

Laurence Bowers had a chance to put the Tigers ahead by 3 points with less than a minute to go in regulation but was able to make just 1 of 2 free throws.  A&M proceeded to tie the game and force overtime.

In overtime, Marcus Denmon forced up a shot with 30 seconds to go when the Tigers had a 1 point lead.  The shot clanked off the rim and Bowers secured the rebound and tapped it back to Denmon.  Rather than pull the ball out, Denmon went on the attack and promptly turned it over allowing for an A&M go ahead basket that the Tigers were never able to recover from.

Decision making and free throws truly killed the Tigers.

Mizzou shot just 9 of 19 from the charity strip, or 47.4%.  Texas A&M was 28 of 39, good for 76.3%.  These stats pretty much sum up the ball game.

Mizzou freshman Phil Pressey scored 16 points, all of which in the second half.  But, with less than 20 seconds left in regulation, rather than try and make a play and find leading scorer Marcus Denmon, Pressey drove to the hole wildly and forced up a shot that went out of bounds.

If the Tigers are going to be a national player in the Final Four picture, they must get to free throw strip more often, knock a higher percentage of those shots down, and make better decisions with the ball in crunch time.

Denmon finished the game with 19 points while forward Ricardo Ratliffe added 19 points and 9 rebounds before fouling out of the game.

Missouri next hosts Kansas State at home at Mizzou Arena on Monday.
