Former Cardinal Ryan Gets New Contract

Brendan Ryan, who was traded to the Seattle Mariners in December after the Cardinals acquired infielder Ryan Theriot, has received a new contract with the Seattle.

In order to avoid arbitration, Ryan signed a 2 year contract paying $2.75 million dollars.   Ryan will receiver $1 million for the 2011 season and $1.75 million in 2012.

Ryan  hit just .223 for the Cardinals in 2010, playing in 139 games, mainly at shortstop.

Ryan will be looking to fill a need in the middle infield in Seattle and will seem to be fighting for playing time between veteran shortstop Jack Wilson and second baseman Chone Figgins.

Ryan was let go by St. Louis in order to make room for Theriot, whose .270 average, .321 on-base percentage, and 20 stolen bases in 2010 represents an offensive upgrade over the erratic but defensive talented Ryan.
