DeWitt Thinks Pujols Deal Will Get Done

Can you imagine how much money Albert Pujols could command on the open market in free agency?

Cardinals CEO William DeWitt Jr. hopes that nobody gets the chance to find out.

DeWitt made it clear that the organization's goal is to make sure that a long-term extension gets worked out with Pujols prior to opening day.

When asked if a deal was eminent within the next couple of days, DeWitt made it clear that the process was still in early stages.

“We’re not that far along yet, so I wouldn’t think so,” DeWitt said. “I never rule anything out, but we’re not targeting that time frame. We’re looking more toward spring training. A deal of this magnitude will take some time.”

Much has been made in the media about how important it is for Pujols to be locked prior to the 2011 season starting and while a deal isn't close right now this very instant, DeWitt is confident that something can get done before baseball is played this year.

“We’ve got time between now and then to get things done,” DeWitt said. “I’m hopeful. But these are big deals, and we’ll make every effort to get it accomplished.

Its a big surprising that an executive in the Cardinals brass would be speaking so publicly with the media with easily the most important asset the in the organization.

You would think the Cardinals would've remembered the raucous between Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees earlier this winter.  Jeter is an icon in New York much like Pujols in St. Louis and taking the risk to make things more complicated than they already are seems silly and absurd.

For Cardinals fans, lets hope it doesn't back-fire too much and that Pujols gets locked up for years to come at a wage that doesn't make everyone pay $15 for a 16 oz. beer.
